Cypress College is remembering Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail, the college’s barrier-breaking 7th president. Dr. Johnson McPhail is known for developing leaders, championing equity, and a life of service. She passed from cancer on March 1.

“She was a first of firsts,” said Cypress College President Dr. Scott W. Thayer. “Her list of achievements, leadership, and vision are an inspiration to many of us who serve in college leadership roles.”

Transfer Center Workshops

The Transfer Center will host several workshops this semester. All on-campus workshops will be held in the Transfer Center on the second floor of the Student Center, and walk-ins are welcome. Online workshops will be held over Zoom. The center will host one event this week, as well as its ongoing series Transfer Tuesdays; keep your eye peeled for the Transfer Center table on campus each week to learn about transfer resources. Financial Aid and Scholarship Workshops

Students: Get funding for school through financial aid and scholarships. These upcoming sessions will help you apply for either, the first from Financial Aid and the second from Peer Tutors, fellow students who support English 1000s, 1000Es, and ESL 110s with class content and overall student success skills. Friday! Spring Theatre Premiere: SpongeBob Musical

 

The Cypress College Theatre Department will stage a production of The SpongeBob Musical starting this week.

Based on the Nickelodeon series, the musical follows SpongeBob SquarePants’ attempts to avert a volcanic eruption in his underwater home of Bikini Bottom. Everyone is welcome at this fun show, and Cypress College employees can purchase tickets for a discount. Visit the box office link and use code CCEMPLOYEE for a $5 discount on tickets. Student pricing is $10 off general ticketing price.

Library Author Talks

Attend a virtual reading via the Cypress College Library during two upcoming Library Author Talks. First, listen to Book Portals and Journeys of Literary Magic with Kate Quinn. Then, log on to hear America’s Failed Response to the Opioid Crisis with Author Shoshana Walter and Special Guest Host Barbara Kingsolver.

Student Health and Wellness Center Grand Opening and Resource Fair

The Student Health & Wellness Center will hold its grand re-opening next week. This event is open to the campus and will feature free food, drinks, and desserts; games, raffles, and prizes; a resource fair; and tours of the Student Health & Wellness Center.

Planetarium Show

Students, employees, and guests can watch the Planetarium show “Birth of Planet Earth,” about how Earth became a living planet following the solar system’s formation, and the potential of finding other Earth-like worlds. Note: The show begins on time, no late entries; doors open 15 minutes before show; no reentries after exiting; all attendees must be over 5 years old. Price: $12 general admission; $6 for NOCCCD employees and students, children, and seniors. Get tickets here.
