“Bringing Light from Darkness”: Teaching About the Holocaust Through Survivor Portraits: A Resource Guide for Educators
The purpose of this guide is to serve as an educational accompaniment to the Ursula Lowenbach Foster Holocaust Survivor Portrait Gallery at Cypress College, as well as to provide an online resource for middle and high school educators and community college faculty to use when teaching about the Holocaust.
The 50-page guide contains suggestions on how educators can utilize the portraits and the survivors’ stories to teach and authentically connect students to the Holocaust. Six complete lessons, classroom activities, and suggestions for out-of-class assignments are included, as are photographs of some of the survivors and other relevant information such as the history of the Holocaust, explanations regarding why it should be taught, and a carefully curated list of resources for further information and support.
All of the more than 50 portraits in the gallery, each of which is accompanied by a brief history of the survivor, can be viewed online. Educators can access the portraits in their classroom, and/or students can be referred to them for further study.
SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union generously supported the development of this guide.
