What is Netiquette?

Netiquette is the combination of Internet and etiquette that refers to the customary code of polite behavior in online settings such as discussion boards, emails, chat messages, and synchronous class meetings.

The following suggestions on proper online behavior will help ensure success in your courses at Cypress College. Just as in a campus-based classroom, there is appropriate conduct for an online classroom. For example, netiquette dictates that using all capital letters in an email is like shouting.

Guidelines for Online Behavior

Professionalism

Show Professionalism and Courtesy

Exhibit the same professionalism and respect in the online class as you would in a campus-based classroom or in the workplace.

  • Arrive on time for synchronous sessions
    • The instructor will have to pause teaching to admit you into the Zoom session, which is very distracting.
  • Be prepared with required materials and completed assignments and questions!
  • Refrain from eating, smoking, and drinking during video sessions
    • This is super distracting to everyone!
  • Read the syllabus thoroughly to understand class expectations
  • Utilize your professor’s office hours for questions and clarifications

Camera & Background

Camera and Background Recommendations

  • Ensure your camera is at eye level for better engagement
  • Check your lighting to make sure you’re clearly visible
  • Choose a neutral background or use a virtual background if available
  • Dress appropriately as you would for an in-person class
  • Be aware of what’s visible in your background

Positive Tone

Set a Positive Tone & Extend Grace and Kindness

  • Use a friendly, conversational tone in your communications
  • Be patient with others who may be struggling with technology
  • Offer help or resources to classmates when appropriate
  • Avoid sarcasm or humor that might be misinterpreted in text
  • Practice empathy and understanding in your interactions

Discussion Guidelines

Follow the Course Discussion Board and Guidelines

  • Read and follow the specific guidelines for each discussion board
  • Stay on topic and contribute meaningfully to discussions
  • Respect differing opinions and express disagreement politely
  • Use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Cite sources when referencing external information

Communication

  • Use clear and concise language in all communications
    • Sorry, most of your instructors do not know what “skibidi” means 🙂
  • Respond to emails and messages in a timely manner
  • Use appropriate salutations and sign-offs in emails
  • Proofread your messages before sending
  • Use the appropriate communication channel for each type of inquiry
    • Canvas email preferred!

Respect Time

  • Be punctual for online meetings and classes
    • If you will be running late or can’t make it to the class make sure to notify the instructor.
  • Submit assignments and group work on time
    • Need more time? Reach out to the instructor!
  • Come prepared for discussions to avoid wasting class time
    • Review previous modules or any information the instructor may cover in class.
    • Check modules to see if the instructor has posted any information for the week. By previewing the information in advance, the information will feel familiar and easier to understand.
  • Respect deadlines set by instructors and peers
    • Don’t know the deadlines? Email the instructor or check your syllabus.
  • Be mindful of others’ time when asking for help or clarification
    • Questions are great! Don’t feel discouraged to ask for additional help or to meet the instructor during office hours.
