If exploring your educational goals, enroll in one of these Career Classes. Course content supports the five stages of the Career Development Process:

COUN 139C Career Exploration

COUN 139 C Career Exploration
1 unit – One hour lecture per week
Pass/No Pass
Stages 1, 2, and 3 of the Career Development Process

This class is designed for students who are undecided about their educational or career goals. Using a career planning process, students assess interests, skills, personality, values, and life/work style choices. Students explore cultural differences and gain an awareness which is applied to work setting. Students research potential educational and careers goals, and relate their self-assessment information to occupational possibilities and college majors. A $6-material fee is payable at registration. Additional cost for career assessments in the class may be required.

This course is currently not offered as it is being revised through the Curriculum process.

COUN 145C Job Readiness and Career Management

COUN 145 C Job Readiness and Career Management
2 units – Two hours lecture per week
Stage 5 of the Career Development Process

Students will learn to successfully bridge from college to the workplace (or make a job transition). In a future of constant change, students will learn how to maximize their strengths, skills, and college learning for gainful and satisfying employment. Students will create a personal brand and professional in-person and online presence to optimize their career opportunities. Résumés, interviewing, business etiquette, job search, networking, and long-term career management issues are discussed, developed, and/or practiced.

COUN 151C Career and Life Planning

COUN 151 C Career and Life Planning
3 units  -Three hours lecture per week and three hours (minimum) laboratory as assigned per semester
Stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the Career Development Process

A complete class in career/life planning includes

  • Introduction to the tools for dealing with change
  • Analysis of desired lifestyles
  • Self-assessment of interests, values, strengths, skills, and personality
  • Overcoming obstacles
  • Analysis of work, organizations, and where you want to work
  • Decision-making and goal-setting
  • Career-research
  • Job search, résumé, and interviewing

A $3-material fee is payable at registration. Additional cost for career assessments in the class may be required.

Dual Enrollment

Career Exploration is a vital component in the Dual Enrollment course offerings.  COUN 139C is the first step in the Charger’s Counseling Experience offered to our local high schools.  COUN 145C is the natural companion course to COUN 139C to teach students about networking, building a résumé, developing a professional brand, and effectively presenting their skills and strengths in college essays, transfer applications, and in the world of work.
