Medical Forensic Exam (MFE)

A MFE includes:

Review of your medical history

Review of the assault

Complete physical exam to assess for injury and to collect evidence that can be held in storage if you aren’t sure about reporting to law enforcement at this time. Evidence may be held for up to 2 years in OC.

Forensic photography if indicated.

Testing for drug-facilitated sexual assault if indicted

Medications to prevent STIs and pregnancy if desired (pregnancy prevention medication needs to be started within 3-5 days and medicine to prevent HIV needs to be started within 3 days)

As a survivor you are in complete control of the exam and decide what is done or not done.

MFEs are free to anyone requesting an exam

*All medical providers in California are mandated reporters- however the survivor is always in control of how much information is provided to law enforcement.

Medical Exam Only

As a survivor taking care of your body may be the first step to recovering control of your life. A medical exam can assess exposure to sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy, and/or internal or other injuries warranting further treatment. No medical evidence is collected.

Reporting

Title IX – is a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs and activities. Title IX addresses sex-based harassment, which includes sexual assault, stalking, and other forms of sex-based misconduct or violence.

While you are out of the window for a MFE with evidence collection, you should still be seen by a medical provider to receive medications to prevent pregnancy and STIs, screen for STIs and assess for any injuries.

Terms:

Victim — a person harmed or injured; often used by police or by legal authorities

Survivor — a person who survives a traumatic event. Emphasizes strength and resilience in the face of adversity rather than on their status as a victim.

SANE — Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, specially trained in trauma and evidence collection.

SART — Sexual Assault Response Team composed of Forensic Nurses, Advocates, law enforcement who respond to sexual assaults in the community.

MFE — Medical Forensic Exam is an exam done by SANE to collect evidence, which is time sensitive. There is a 5-day window to collect evidence.
