Scholarships

For the Bill Clarke Memorial Scholarship, students should meet the following criteria:

  1. At least two 100-200 level courses in English at Cypress College, completed or in progress.
  2. Outstanding performance in English courses, particularly in film and/or literature.
  3. Superior writing ability.
  4. Superior class performance including attendance, class participation, study habits, and responsibility.
  5. Potential for a career as an English teacher.

For the J. Robert Leach Memorial Award, students should meet the following criteria:

  1. At least three 100-200 level courses in English at Cypress College, completed or in progress.
  2. Outstanding student performance in English with a preponderance of ‘A’ grades.
  3. Superior writing ability.
  4. Superior class performance including attendance, participation, study habits, and intellectual curiosity.

Nomination Procedures:

Students must be nominated by an instructor.

To nominate a student for the Bill Clarke Memorial Scholarship:

  • Review the qualification criteria
  • Fill out the nomination form and letter, listing what the student must include with his/her submission
  • Include two of the student’s essays which focus on topics related to literature and/or film, plus one more essay to demonstrate breadth (an in-class essay, creative writing piece, research paper). The essays should be original papers complete with instructor comments.

To nominate a student for the J. Robert Leach Memorial Award:

  • Review the qualification criteria
  • Fill out the nomination form and letter, listing what the student must include with his/her submission
  • Attach with the recommendation form three essays submitted for credit in one or more English classes, plus one more paper to demonstrate breadth (an in-class essay, creative writing piece, essay exam, research paper). The essays should be original papers complete with instructor comments.

In addition, the student will submit a short autobiographical essay.
