Cypress Writing Center

Cypress Writing Center (CWC)

The Cypress Writing Center (CWC) provides students with virtual and in-person supplemental learning opportunities designed to enhance their academic reading and writing skills. Free for all students, all majors, and all writing projects. Staffed by trained tutors as well as Cypress College English and ESL faculty, the CWC offers individualized Writing Assignment tutor meetings, Paper Drop-Off services, writing workshops, conversation labs, and Directed Learning Activities (DLAs).

Appointment and Drop-In Tutoring for Writing Assignments

The CWC offers tutoring by appointment or on a Drop-in Basis. A student may have two (2) 30-minute sessions per day. We do NOT proofread or edit papers. The goal of these sessions is to get students to start working on a maximum of two (2) specific elements of their paper. These sessions are great for brainstorming, expanding ideas, or checking formatting.

Online tutoring sessions are up to 30 minutes in length.

Paper Drop-Off Services

The Cypress Writing Center Paper Drop-off service will be available for any Cypress College student to submit any writing assignment from any subject to a CWC tutor for feedback. We do NOT proofread or edit papers. The goal of these sessions is to get students to start working on a maximum of two (2) specific elements of their paper. These sessions are great for brainstorming, expanding ideas, or checking formatting.

Registration for the CWC Canvas is required to use this service. Please click on the CWC Canvas Registration button below to start.

When using the CWC paper drop-off service, ensure that you complete the required CANVAS quiz. Please provide all the necessary information about your prompt and attach your instructor’s directions for the assignment. After submitting your paper, you can expect to receive feedback within 48 to 72 hours (turnaround time).

Please note that the 48-72 hours are during our hours of tutoring operation. The 48–72-hour turnaround time does not include the weekend or holidays. A paper submitted on Thursday at noon should be returned to you at noon the following Monday.

Directed Learning Activities (DLAs)

DLAs are faculty-designed assignments that focus on developing reading or writing skills, or an academic strategy, within a limited, supervised timeframe. Each directed learning activity will require approximately 60 minutes to complete and include an overview of the activity’s objective(s) and steps involved, as well as a review session with a tutor or faculty member.
