English Success Center

The English Success Center (ESC) provides students with virtual supplemental learning opportunities designed to improve academic reading and writing skills. Staffed by trained tutors as well as Cypress College English and ESL faculty, the ESC offers individualized Writing Assignment tutor meetings and Electronic Directed Learning Activities (eDLAs).

In accordance with Cypress College’s policies surrounding Coronavirus/COVID-19, the ESC is suspending face-to-face tutoring until further notice. During this time, we are providing online tutoring sessions through Zoom with our ESC tutors.

Drop-In Tutoring *temporarily changed to scheduled writing tutoring

The ESC offers tutoring on an emailed first come, first served basis.  A student may have one (1) thirty (30) minute session per day. The goal of these sessions is to get students to start working on a maximum of two (2) specific elements of their paper. These sessions are great for brainstorming, expanding ideas, or checking MLA format.

Online tutoring sessions are 30 minutes in length. Same day appointments may be available.

Steps for Scheduling a Writing Assignment Tutoring Appointment:

STEP #1: To request a scheduled tutoring appointment, students must email us at EnglishSuccessCenter@CypressCollege.edu with the following information:

  • Your name and student ID #
  • Course Name and CRN
  • Upload a copy of your assignment (no Google Doc links)
  • Preferred Date & Time of Appointment (you may include additional times in case the original time is unavailable and/or request first available time slot)

STEP #2: A staff member will reply as soon as possible during business hours. When an appointment is scheduled, students will receive an email confirming the appointment. Additionally, students will receive an email from the ESC with a link to access their Zoom online tutoring appointment.

STEP #3: Use the link from Zoom to confirm your tutor meeting appointment.

STEP #4: Log on to Zoom at your confirmed time slot to review your DLA with a tutor.

Directed Learning Activities (DLA)

DLAs are faculty-designed assignments that focus on the development of a reading or writing skill, or academic strategy, within a limited, supervised timeframe. Each directed learning activity will require approximately 60 minutes to complete and include an overview of the activity’s objective(s) and steps involved, as well as a review session with a tutor or faculty member.
