Located in LRC-126, the English Success Center (ESC) provides students with supplemental learning opportunities designed to improve academic reading and writing skills. Staffed by trained tutors as well as Cypress College English, Reading, ESL faculty, the ESC offers Directed Learning Activities (DLAs) and Faculty-led Workshops. Additionally, students may use the computers in the ESC to write papers for their coursework.
Directed Learning Activities (DLA)
DLAs are faculty-designed assignments that focus on the development of a reading or writing skill, or academic strategy, within a limited, supervised timeframe. Each directed learning activity will require approximately 60 minutes to complete and include an overview of the activity’s objective(s) and steps involved, as well as a review session with a tutor or faculty member.
Faculty Mentor Workshops
The workshops are intensive, 50- to 60-minute presentations focused on the development of a specific academic skill or strategy in a small-group setting (typically 6-8 students). Each workshop will include an overview of the topic, a short presentation, and a hands-on activity.
The ESC offers drop-in tutoring on a first come, first served basis. A student can have up to two drop-in tutoring sessions per day. Each session is limited to ten (10) minutes. The goal of these sessions is to get students to start working on a specific element of their paper. These sessions are great for brainstorming ideas or checking MLA format. There are computers in the ESC where students can continue working after the tutoring sessions.
